Welcome! I am John Burdick and I want to be your kitchen designer. I am here to help you create the kitchen of your dreams, and to do that I have created a 45 minutes series of videos to provide you with the information you need to get started.
With so much available on the web and TV, it is often difficult to know where to begin. Here is the basic information you need to know, and that I try to provide by clarifying the design process.
After the Welcome video, I start with a discussion of basic cabinet construction; explaining types of cabinetry, materials used, the construction of doors, drawers and runner systems, and various finish options. This all helps you understand what you are looking at when you shop for cabinetry.
Next I review appliances, their options and features, and how your choices not only affect price, but also how they affect design, function and safety.
I then discuss the rudiments of kitchen layout, how to solve the ergonomics of your space to best enhance its function. It is my belief that only by creating a kitchen that is easy to work in and that also meets your lifestyle needs, will you be truly satisfied. The beauty of a new kitchen quickly wears off if it isn't a joy to work in. Here I talk about appliance placement, traffic patterns, primary and secondary work zones, the pros and cons of islands and peninsulas, and integrating with adjacent spaces.
Lastly, I show you how to properly measure your kitchen and how to make a detailed sketch of the space for accurate planning purposes.
As I travel throughout most of northern New England, I can easily visit your home and help you start the design process.
